I work from my home office quite a bit and was becoming a bit stale in my routine and couldn't seem to break out of the rut I was in. I decided I needed to change a couple of things and get a new perspective.Since I work with a laptop computer which is very mobile, I decided the first step was to move my work area somewhere that was a bit more inspiring than a corner of a spare bedroom.
I had a suitcase adjustable height folding table in my basement just asking to be unfolded and used. It folds up just like a suitcase when you aren't using it, which is what makes it handy. It is really nice because I just took it outside on my sunporch, which is enclosed with sliding glass doors, but if I leave them open, I can feel the nice breeze outside.
I also adjusted it so it was the perfect height to go with my desk chair. You wouldn't think that was too important, but try typing on your keyboard all day with the lower part of your arms against the side of a too tall table and feel the extra tiredness in your hands from typing at that angle.
The table is just big enough for my laptop and extra keyboard, my calculator, and a desk organizer that I keep my important work files in. I also have room for my pen and pencil holder, that is big enough even to store my 2 highlighters I use every day. I use those to keep track of cleared and entered posts in my checkbook registers.
My pencil cup is a neat little gadget since it has a digital picture frame built right in and I loaded up some of my favorite pictures of my horses, my iguana, my german shepherds and oh yeah...my human family haha.
Anyway, back to the story: I moved my table outside to the porch, where I had just placed some nice tropical plants and flowers. I had a view of my backyard, complete with a fountain making soothing noises, my flowering trees and shrubs and my dogs playing outside.
You would be amazed how much just moving your workspace to somewhere new and fresh will help your attitude and work performance. It doesn't sound like much, but my mind is clearer and I am able to work with a much improved attitude.
