It is not only you my readers that I have to tell this message to. I also have to tell this to myself for failing to do what I have to do and due to severe procrastination.Maybe we should ask ourselves first, why do we procrastinate? It is not logical, don't you think, to set aside duties when we know that setting it aside will just get the better of us when deadlines come.
But we human beings do not normally act using purely our logical functions. Sometimes our emotions get the better of us so we procrastinate. There is this lack of foresight that prevents us from fully realizing that we have to do what we can do at the moment because if we do not do these duties immediately, we will regret it. We procrastinate because we do not want to work in the short-term. Procrastination is relaxing, it seems. We think that we have all the time in this world when we most definitely do not.
Oh boy, do you sense the passion in these words? It's because I am speaking from my experience as a procrastinator.
We always tell ourselves that we will not procrastinate the next day. I, for one, just told myself that I will finish reading this programming languages book tomorrow. I hope I can manage to do that and avoid putting it off for another day FOR THE THIRD TIME.
So how do we fight procrastination? My apologies, I cannot formulate advice on my own. These are just some tips I gathered from my friends and acquaintances who have successfully fought procrastination:
- Make a hobby out of doing things right away. If procrastination can be a habit, so is accomplishing duties early on. Find a reason for doing your tasks immediately like how you make reasons not to accomplishing tasks immediately.
- Create a to-do list with days for yout tasks, jot them down to your notebook, and stick to that schedule.
- Find a motivation. All it takes is a little inspiration to do better. It may be as simple as the 'Employee of the Month' award or as grand a vacation after the work is done.
- Find another way of doing things. One of the reasons why people procrastinate is because we find the way to accomplish tasks to be unappealing. Add seom twist to your life and make your tasks worth looking forward to.
Lastly, if you still feel that you need some sort of motivation, then always watch the inspirational video above from Mr. T. (The following video was taken from a promotional ad for the 2006 series, "I Pity the Fool".)
