A Key Story

By Blog Stories at 05/10/2008 03:50
"Where did my keys go?"

I guess this is one of those questions that a person repeats to ask himself/herself over and over again. We spend many many hours of our life trying to look for these keys. No matter how organized a person is, there will come a time when he/she won't know where did the keys go. This is largely because keys are small and could be put practically everywhere.

There have been lots of stories made about lost keys, some of which are funny, some are not. Your blogger here even has his own story to share.

I cannot remember where I had gone that day. What I am sure of is that I was outside, and the house was locked--and the keys were inside! I had forgotten to bring it with me. Now, where was it? I couldn't remember immediately, until I realized that it was inside a drawer in my room, which was far away from the window. What was I supposed to do? I borrowed a long pole from my neighbor, the kind that they use to pick fruits from the nearby mango tree. It had a hook that I could use to get the keys by its ring. It would be tough, but I had no choice. I was in luck, the drawer was open. Leaning on the open window, I slowly put the pole inside and tried to hook keys. Slowly, very slowly, I got it--but it slid down the pole and unto the floor! Tsk. I had to try again, but really really slowly and carefully. Once I hooked it once again, I tilted the pole up, and the keys slid to my hands.

I was sweating really hard. I was not used to doing those kinds of things. What is the lesson of the story? Make a duplicate copy of your key and hook it to your pants with a key ring.

Protecting Your Digital Files

By Blog Stories at 05/09/2008 15:42
I am sure that this blog has already featured dozens of posts giving you advice on how to keep your files safe from potential danger of loss and destruction. Some posts were dedicated to helping you organize your office, which essentially includes your files. Some posts talked about how will you be able to file and retrieve documents easily. Looking at the past posts will give you much knowledge when it comes to file organization and safety. If you will look at most of these posts, they deal more with the protection of physical files. However, in the 21st century, there is another kind of file that you have to protect--digital files. What can you do to ensure these files' protection? Here are some things to remind yourself. These are not groundbreaking ideas. They are just here to give you a reminder.
  • Make sure that the computers where your files are are protected from viruses, spyware, and other distasteful elements. Also make sure that you have a firewall running. You won't want just anyone to access your company's confidential files, do you?
  • Always create a BACKUP! This is one thing that many file keepers forget, so when an accident happens and all the files are deleted, they are deleted forever. Store them in other media like DVDs.
  • Then make sure that these backup files are stored somewhere safe. If you can afford, then purchase fire-safe data storage chest so you are sure these data are safe even when a fire breaks.
  • Keep your location safe from thieves and other wrongdoers. I guess this is obvious.

There you go. Follow those reminders and you won't be crying over lost data. Remember, lost data means time wasted on recovery--and wasted time means wasted money of your company.

Outside is Also Inside

By Blog Stories at 05/08/2008 12:47
Hygiene and orderliness outside the office is as important as hygiene and orderliness inside the office. Who would be enthusiastic to work inside the office when, just before you enter, you'll already see graffiti on the walls and trash littered everywhere. Blame people for inventing hygiene, but dirty surroundings just isn't pleasing to the eye. What can you do to ensure a good environment outside your office?
  • Plant trees or put potted plants. Nothing beats greeneries lined up outside your walls. It isn't only a beauty to the eye, but it also serves as your community's lungs, as concrete pavements cannot breathe, anyway. Put as many as possible. Some may think that it may lead to your office looking like a greenhouse, but more plants is better than none.
  • Depending on the location of your office, try not to put too much distraction outside your doorstep. Try not to make the doorway an eyesore to those entering the office premises.
  • Don't stack garbage outside! I know it's the government's role to make sure that the sidewalks are free from clutter, but you should also do your part in maintaining a clean community. Putting a trash can just outside your place will already do.
  • If your office is part of a big company, then you might not need to think about this. But if you are just keeping a home office, then you should not strive for a healthy physical order, but also a healthy social order as well. Befriend the people in the community. Hey, this goes for everyone, if you'll think about it.

What I've mentioned above are obvious. But we tend to forget things, that's why a little reminder will always be welcome.

Keeping Your Kids Busy During the Summer Vacation

By Blog Stories at 05/08/2008 12:23
Summer in America is already near. Kids say that this is the best time of the year because they are out of school but, ironically, after weeks of nothing to do, you'll hear them say they are bored. They will out of school but that does not mean they have to do nothing during this three-month vacation. What do you have to do to keep your little ones busy during this season? Here are some suggestions.
  • Enroll them in one of those summer camps. These camps are designed to keep your children busy and productive even without schools. One example of these camps are the sports camps usually organized by your local community.
  • If your children really love to learn, then hire a tutor or enroll them in an advanced studying session. Does that sound really geeky? Well, if that's keeping your children happy, then why not give them that?
  • Take time off from your work and plan a trip out of town for your children. It's summer. It isn't your children who needs to take a vacation but you as well. Go hiking, camping, or riding a roller coaster and enjoy a day inside a theme park, or even driving to the other side of the country, Or flying abroad and see new places. It's your call. Be creative and adventurous!
  • Of course there will be days when you cannot think of anything to keep your kids busy, and yet they are bored. When this happens, give them something that will exploit their creativity and intelligence. Give them something like a clay dough or kid's paint or a stack of newspapers. Let their minds wander. Let the idea flow out of their heads.

There are many things you can do to keep them busy. Just talk to them and you will know what to do.

Betty and Veronica

By Blog Stories at 05/06/2008 14:26
You've probably heard of the "Betty and Veronica Syndrome", a condition in which the protagonist of a story is torn between two potential lovers, but fails to choose which of the two he/she (the protagonist) really likes. It was named after Betty and Veronica who are main characters in the comic series Archie. In the series, which started in the early 40's, Archie is forever choosing between these two rival women.

In the right corner, we have Betty Andrews. This blonde beauty is surely anyone's sweetheart. Girlish yet boyish, Betty does not say no to any challenge she faces. She's also intelligent--what else should you ask for? I cannot believe that Archie still hasn't chosen Betty over Veronica.

In the other corner, we have rich and spoiled Veronica Lodge. Armed with all the money in the world, this lady is known for her extravagant purchases and actions like, say, filling a swimming pool with mineral water, or going to some far-away land just to do some shopping. Why is Archie falling for her. Is it just because she's rich?

The funny thing is, Veronica and Betty are still friends despite their rivalry. Why not, when they actually look like each other? They have their differences (and major ones at that), but that doesn't prevent them from being best buddies.

Like in any "Betty and Veronica Syndrome", it would be advisable if Archie would decide once and for all. Because of Archie's failure to decide, the two girls are almost always at war, devising ways to make sure that the other doesn't make a move towards our guy. At least, when Archie finally chooses, whoever won't be chosen will have to move on. I'd rather that he choose Betty but, if not, then that's just fine ith me. Just choose!

In the meantime, Archie should purchase an appointment book so that he doesn't invite both of the girls to the same date at the same time.

Inflate, Deflate

By Blog Stories at 05/05/2008 15:49
Do you like balloons? Well, it doesn't take you to like them just to know that you need air to make them big and round. That's common sense. That would also go for 'inflatables' like boats. You have to make them portable and, with their size, you cannot make them that if you cannot have them occupy less space when not needed.

If blowing into these things with our mouths is that simple, then we would be all doing that instead of looking for something else to make air. Just imagine how much air will your lungs have to produce before it fills up one balloon, let alone an entire boat!

That's why we have inflators, like this Metro Magic Air 110V Inflator/Deflator from Metro Data-Vac. As you can probably see, Metro Data-Vac is not a producer of fine vacuum cleaners alone but of other handheld machineries as well. This handheld gadget is all made from steel. This means it's durable and mostly weather-resistant. Weighing only three pounds, this device can be carried around anywhere where there is a socket. The only problem I could think of is that you don't normally bring a socket with you when you're outdoors! But bringing a generator with you will solve that.

One more thing that I like about this product is that it is not only an inflator, but a deflator as well, making it a double gadget. Gone are the days when you have to wait for quite a while until your inflatable loses all the air it contains.

With the Metro Data-Vac Inflator and Deflator, you're ready to get into more boats and send away more balloons.

More of Lecterns

By Blog Stories at 05/04/2008 13:51
Budget vis-a-vis usability is always a key factor before you decide to purchase an office item here in Office 1000, right? So that makes buying office equipment all the more difficult.

Did you have a hard time which will suit you better, a tabletop lectern or a full lectern? Contrasting these two items, you will see that each has its own sets of advantages and disadvantages, and it's all up to you to decide which is better. It would've probably been better if you could have both but since they have the same basic function, why bother?

Some of you have probably decided to purchase a tabletop lectern. It is lightweight, portable, and cheaper. It's better to use them in places where there's limited space and you'll also be needing it more than you need a full lectern when there are lot of tables in your office. But what happens when there is none available around? What will you do?

In cases like this, it would be advisable to purchase something like this Veneer Contemporary Lectern Base Model #901 from Oklahoma Sound in addition to the top one. With this base, your tabletop lectern is transformed into a floor lectern, something that you will have to use when there are no tables around or you need something to add to your dignity. This is assuming, of course, that the need for a top lectern is more frequent than the need for a floor lectern. Otherwise, it would be advisable to buy the latter from the very beginning, instead.

So, which is it? Do you need a floor lectern or a tabletop lectern (plus lectern base)?

What Paper Shredder Will You Use?

By Blog Stories at 05/03/2008 15:44
Wouldn't it be nice if shredding paper is this fun?

YouTube Video

That's adorable, no? Problem is, it would take so much time just to shred a piece of paper into a dozen pieces. I also think that that it wouldn't be fun anymore if you're going to manually cut up hundreds of pages of paper all at the same time. Just imagine how many hours would it take!

And so we find a more efficient alternative: a paper shredding machine. The oh-so-familiar paper shredder, with the so many pranks pulled using its features. We actually have one shredder machine sold here in Office 1000. Is there any office products website that doesn't sell THE machine, anyway?

What we have here is the 10 Sheet CD/DVD Vertical Feed Crosscut Shredder from Royal. It's a lightweight paper crunching steel monster that can destroy even things like credit cards and CDs. It has an auto-start and auto-stop function, so need to turn on and off the switch when you need it. All in all, it can store up to 18 liters of shredded trash. For most personal purposes, it may come in handy, since it makes a perfect accessory to your office cubicle. Just forget the extra pounds that you may lose by walking every now and then to that giant paper shredder at the corner of the office.

Another drawback when you use this paper shredder is that it is not as enjoyable had you used the shredder in the video instead. Oh well.

It's An Insecure Computer

By Blog Stories at 05/01/2008 11:16
Western culture has this frenzy for security. Everything has to be kept secured from unauthorized access. That includes computers. Well, nobody here is complaining. Is there anyone with a clear mind who would allow unidentified people to access his/her banking information online, anyway?

In today's world where the things we used to do physically are now being done by our computers, computer security is an important issue as ever. From the bit level to the operating system and applications, customers should be assured that everything is safe--or, at least, minimally threatened.

But it's not just the data inside the computer that one should worry about. If it's a portable, then the computer itself should also be protected from thieves. Why, there are even locks (yes, physical locks) like this one from Acco for those who are really worried about their portable machines.

This laptop lock from Acco is literally a metal cable that will be attached to your notebook. The patented T-bar locking mechanism is used to fit the lock into your laptop's security slot (These kinds of slots are seen in almost all notebooks out there). Don't worry; the steel cable is of aircraft grade. These notebook locks are good if you desire to allow people to access the laptop in an unattended area. Otherwise, if you are there to look over things or you do not plan to allow people to use the notebooks, these locks would be useless.

Hmmm. It would be nice, though, if we could just trust these people--but I guess I am just dreaming since some people are just not worth the trust. You can never be too sure when it comes to expensive things.
