In today's world, everyone has their eye on going "Green". There are green products everywhere, to our benefit. It is our way of trying to put the brakes on destroying the very environment in which we survive. With the new generation of Rating Systems for buildings, we have the LEED 2009 "Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design" and the USGBC "United States Green Building Council guidelines that many look to for guidance in creating buildings that have a lesser carbon footprint.
With the development of these credit programs comes another issue though: The new weighing system for LEED has put a great deal of emphasis on both Energy and Atmosphere to the detriment of the overall indoor air quality.
Many new homes and buildings are built to be as energy efficient as possible, but this means these same buildings and homes have less ventilation, which results in higher levels of indoor air pollutants.
The buildup of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) can come from sources you wouldn't even think of:
- Furniture
- Wall Coverings
- Repair Supplies
- Bedding
- Hobby Supplies
With less ventilation, these chemicals have nowhere to go, so they pollute the air inside the buildings.
GreenGuard Certified products, which have been independently tested and are certified to have low chemical emissions, help to achieve better indoor air quality and contribute to LEED point and credit goals.
Green is great, it definitely helps our environment. GreenGuard is even better! Remember, we only have one environment.
