Part of studying is extracting important information from a wealth of text and turning it into a more manageable source of knowledge. Not everything that is written on the text book is important for our purposes.To do this, there are two primary ways that I can think of. The first is by taking down notes, which, I think, is an important skill that anybody should acquire. This is not only useful for blocks of texts but also for speeches or other oral presentations, wherein there is no other way but to write down important details. It is impossible to copy down the whole speech. The mind works far faster than the hand.
