I used to love the back to school time of year. My shopping sickness and I were very gleeful to pick out colorful school supplies for each of my four kids in elementary and middle school.Several things happened to take away my delight in this wonderous time of year, which to me due to my love of colorful office supplies, was better than Christmas.
First, as my kids got older, they didn't appreciate the pretty little folders with horses on them and pencils with little feathers where the eraser goes.
Pretty soon, my oldest girl was graduating from high school and moving on to college. Well that stinks, because all you get to buy for college students are expensive books (highway robbery of you ask me what they charge for textbooks) and plain old filler paper. Boooorrrring!
It just kept getting worse and worse each year until finally the last whammy! This year my youngest daughter is the last one in high school. She is a junior this year and guess what they school did?
They made all the kids use laptops this year. All their class notes, homework, schedules..everything right there on the computer they have to lug around every day. You know what that means? No colorful neon Mead notebooks, no kickin gel pens, not even a pretty plastic ruler in that backpack!
What is a shopping loving mother to do?
This whole computer idea was a very bad one by the way. Right up there with the No Child Left Behind, which leaves all of our children behind (just ask a teacher), this is the mother of hair brained ideas.
They had the kids download the instant messenger program so the administrators could send them messages. Guess what the the kids are doing the whole class period? Yep, you guessed it.
I vote we bring the beautiful notebooks back along with learning fundamentals instead of teaching kids to take multiple choice tests and completely kill my shopping opportunities!
